WELCOME GROUPS 12 AND 13!

I thought I would share some English and Math tasks for you to work on, if you so wish. Keep in mind that this is all optional, and is not to be completed for marks. If you have any questions, please email me at

sgeorgaklis@nfsb.qc.ca.

You are in my thoughts.

Stay safe,

Here are your tasks for the week of June 14th:

ENGLISH:

This week's task will be in 2 parts:

1.  Write your "I Have a Dream" speech:

  • Young people CAN make a difference. Watch this inspirational video of a young man who was not much older than you when he delivered his speech in front of the United Nations in 2015. He is an Indigenous climate activist.        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27gtZ1oV4kw
  • Type or write your speech out, using your outline as a guide.
  • In the Pages and Files section , there is an example of how to write an introduction and conclusion to help you. The document is called "I Have a Dream Introduction and Conclusion". Remember to click next at the bottom, right-hand corner of the page.

2.  Complete the outline on "Paragraph 1 of Response" on Laura's Key:

  • Now that you have read "Laura's Key", you are to think about the meaning of this story.
  • On a piece of looseleaf, list 2 things that you feel the author was trying to teach the reader.
  • Choose the one you feel strongest about, the one that you can explain in 3 sentences. Use this one for the next bullet.
  • Using the "Response Paragraph 1 Outline" in the Pages and Files section, fill in this outline about the main idea/meaning of Laura's Key that you chose. Remember, the main idea/meaning is what you feel the author was trying to teach the reader.
  • In the reading section of your English binder, you have this same outline and the paragraph you wrote in Term 1 about "The Most Mature Thing You Have Ever Seen". Use this as your guide. This week, your task is only to fill in the outline.

MATH:

This week's tasks will be in 2 parts:

1.  Review:

  • Math Help Services: Lesson 38: Converting Between Fractions, Decimals and Percents

2.  End of Year "Review":

If we were "in class", we would be spending the last few Math classes preparing you for a final exam. These 2                                            Math Help Services Practice Exams are a good review. Both exams are in the Pages and Files section, they are                                            called "Practice Exam 1" and "Practice Exam 2".

  • Practice Exams 1 & 2- multiple choice, short answer & word problems – mix of essential topics from the year
    • We have covered all topics except a few. Don't be concerned if you have not seen some of the material, you can try these questions or skip them. Here are the questions you may not recognize:
      • Exam One
        • # 1 (altitude - another word for "height")
        •  #5 - Angles (corresponding & alternate)
        • # 11 - translation (slides from elementary school - go from the base of the arrow to the tip - how far left/right and how far up/down --> move each of your points this distance)
      • Exam Two
        • # 1 - Reflection (flip from elementary school - mirror image)
        • #7 - Pattern Rule

MATH:

New material as of May 21st:

1.  Review the notes on "The Important Terms and Formulas" in the Pages and Files section. On this document you will find a summary of all that we have covered in the last few weeks.

2.  Finding the area of a Trapezoid.

  • Watch this video only up to 2:16 (meaning 2 minutes and 16 seconds). I really like tha way it shows you how to start with the formula, figure out which numbers to put where (substitute), and follow each step to find the answer. I suggest you watch it more than once.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wNS-qgvoj8

  • Following the same steps in the video, complete p. 165 in your Workbook (you should all have it now). Take your time, follow each step and check your calculations.

3.   Word Problems:

  • I suggest you try a few word problems in this chapter. Look at p. 174 in your Workbook and try #1 to 5 and p. 175.
  • If you're looking for more word problems, work on these:   Workbook p.178 # 8, 9, 11, 13-15

To start off the week, let's correct last week's homework:

  • The answers to the area of a parallelogram and triangle are in Pages and Files - the document is called "Answers to Area of Parallelogram and Triangle".

And... do some review:

  • Math Help Services: I have given you 2 assignments: Order of Operations Part 2 (with integers) and Identifying Points on a Cartesian Plane.

To come later on in the week, new material in the Area and Perimeter chapter. Stay tuned...

Here are your tasks for the week of May 11th:

ENGLISH:

Making your vision board:

  • It's best to work on it over the course of the week so that you can think about, and keep on coming back to it with fresh eyes and ideas.
  • The instruction sheet is in the "Pages and Files section"
  •  Refer to my example - sent to you by email.
  • ENJOY!

MATH:

The answers to the Workbook questions and “Square and Rectangle Work at Home” sheets are now in the Pages and Files section.

I hope you had a minute to check the solutions to the Math Help Services practice chapter tests.

I have now assigned 2 review assignments on Math Help Services:

  • Adding and subtracting integers (Tip: If you see some thing like this  6 + -5, put brackets around each integer so it makes sense to you, like this (6) + (-5).
  • Multiplying and dividing integers (Tip: If you see something like this (-4)(+3), remember that two brackets next to each other means multiply so it means the same thing as (-4) x (+3).

This week, we will focus on the area of a parallelogram and triangle. The explanation sheet, along with two practice sheets, is in the "Pages and Files section". Part way through the week, I will assign some more review of past topics as well.

Here are the two videos for you to watch (listed on explanation sheet in the "Pages and Files section" :

Area of parallelogram:     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm17lVaor0Q

Area of triangle:     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRTXKQpblEc

Here are your tasks for the week of May 4th:

ENGLISH:

This past week, you were asked to read articles on the “big idea” that depending on your life circumstances, your goals/dreams may be different. In the back of your mind, I would like for you to think about the following question, “If I were to pick one goal that I would like to work towards, what would it be?” We will go into more detail in the coming weeks.

This week’s task will be in two parts:

1.  Article: CVR gym teacher finishes just ahead of bombings - The Gleaner - 2013 (in "Pages & Files" section)

  • This  article is about Mr.Theriault, who has a passion for running marathons, qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2013.
  • Read this article and when you are done, answer the following question, "Name 5 things that you think helped Mr.Theriault finish the run."
  • I'll come back to this next week.

2.  Vision Board: A vision board is a visual representation of dreams and goals that you would like to actively work on to achieve.

So what does this mean? It means that eventually, once the outline (see below) is complete, you will create a vision board on a regular white piece of paper (8.5 in. x 11 in.) to represent the things you chose to include in your outline. The purpose of this vision board is for you to put it up in your room as a constant reminder of some of your goals/dreams. The first step towards making the vision board is to complete the outline. So for this week:

  • Complete the outline (in "Pages & Files" section). If you can't print it, you can answer the questions on a piece of looseleaf.
  • This will help you think about things that you would like to include on your vision board.
  • Please don't worry about what you will need to make it, or what it will look like, we will discuss this next week and I will provide an example.

MATH:

Assigned May 7th:

Here is some more review:

Math Help Services:

Lesson 5: Calculating Powers

Below is some material you have already seen in elementary school on Area and Perimeter. Here are the steps:

  • When calculating area and perimeter, please make sure you always start with the formula.
  • Take a look at the "Chapter 5 Review Notes At Home" in the Pages & Files Section .
  • Watch this video on Youtube to better understand how to find the area of a figure:    https://youtu.be/1dqAOKdJmRI
  • If you have your workbook at home, the work that corresponds to this topic is:
    • Page 160 # 1 – 4
    • Page 161 – All
    • Page 162 # 3 – 8
    • Page 163 # 1, 4, 6
    • Page 164 # 1, 3, 5.
  • If you do not have your workbook at home, I have taken photos of the pages from the Math Quest textbook and included them in the document called "Square & Rectangle Work at Home" in the Pages & Files Section .

Assigned May 5th:

We will start off with 2 "review" assignments on Math Help Services: (Remember, your login information was sent to your NFSB email accounts).

  • Chapter 1 - Natural Numbers
  • Chapter 3 - Integers

*It's important to keep on reviewing what we have already covered.

I have given you until May 19th to complete these review exercises. The solutions will be  available to you on MHS as of May 14th so that you can check your check and see how you're doing.

*In the next few days, I will assign new work as a continuation of the chapter on Area and Perimeter.

Here are your tasks for the week of April 27th:

ENGLISH:

Now that you set a goal and see it through, I hope that you feel a sense of accomplishment. Imagine if, week after week, you continued to set small goals, all the while, working towards something bigger. Something to be discussed in the coming weeks…

Article Reading

We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams. ~ Jimmy Carter

The idea behind this quote is that we all have different dreams, and that dreams mean different things to different people. In Africa, perhaps a child’s dream is to have access to clean, drinking water and to go to school. If you lived in the mid-1800’s in the United States as a slave, your dream was to one day be free. If you were born with a disability, your dream might be to be able to do the same thing that your peers can do. Other dreams might be to finish high school and go on to college, run a marathon, get a good job and own a house or own a 1967 Shelby Mustang!

This week’s task will be to read 3 articles from Scholastic Scope (see links below). As you read the articles, remember that, “Dreams mean different things to different people”.

The titles of the articles are:

Escape From Slavery - https://scope.scholastic.com/etc/classroom-magazines/reader.html?id=50-020118

The Amazing Powers of Jen Bricker - https://scope.scholastic.com/etc/classroom-magazines/reader.html?id=50-020117

Thirst - https://scope.scholastic.com/etc/classroom-magazines/reader.html?id=50-050116

After you read each article, write a quick reflection answering the following questions:

  •  What is your reaction to this article?
  • What do you think the person’s dream was?
  • What impact did this person’s “dream” have on the community or society?

Stay tuned for next week’s task. Happy reading!

MATH:

The answers to last week’s Math Review Questions are now in the Pages and Files Section.

Math Help Services is now up and running! I understand that this is a new tool, be patient and take the time to explore the site. Your login information has been sent to your NFSB email addresses. Each week, I will assign some topics for you to work on.

In your email, you will notice that I have given you an assignment for each topic. Feel free to watch the videos to help you understand if needed. Keep in mind that you have seen these topics in elementary school.

This week’s topics are in Chapter 8:

The Metric System – One Dimensional Conversions

Perimeter of a Polygon – Level 1

Perimeter of a Polygon – Level 2

The neat thing about Math Help Services is that you will know if your answers are correct after you answer the questions.

***NOTE: The three assignments will be available for you to complete until next Sunday, May 3rd at 11:00 pm.

Here are your tasks for the week of April 20th:

ENGLISH:

If we were in class right now, we would be working on the term 3 question, “How do we achieve our dreams?” An unknown author once said, “Never let it be said that to dream is to waste one’s time, for dreams are our reality in waiting. In dreams, we plant the seeds for our future.” This has always been my favourite unit since I really do feel that looking ahead and thinking about some of the things you would like to accomplish is valuable exercise that I wish someone had gone through with me when I was your age. So, I thought I would take you through the process of exploring this “big idea” over the next few weeks. Please keep in mind that this is optional and will not be evaluated.

Here are the tasks that I will be sharing with you over the course of the next few weeks:

  • Goal setting

  • Reading articles based on this “big idea”

  • Reading about a person who has achieved a goal/dream

  • Making your own vision board

  • A 10-step power point or poster on a plan that you have come up with to reach a goal/dream

  • Write a narrative about someone reaching a goal/achieving a dream

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 20TH:

GOAL SETTING...

Setting goals is the first step to turning the invisible into visible. – Tony Robbins

We have had classroom discussions about the importance of setting goals, after all, reaching one goal after the next leads to a bigger goal/dream. This week, I would like you to focus on setting a goal and tracking your progress. Remember, a S.M.A.R.T. goal is one that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.

Step 1: Choose a goal. It can be based on anything of your choosing, examples are: getting outside, less screen time, playing with your siblings, helping with household chores, being in touch with family/friends, being active, trying new recipes, reading, etc.

Step 2: Write it down as a S.M.A.R.T. goal. Here are some examples:

  • In the next 7 days, I will go outside 4 times for a minimum of 30 minutes.

  • In the next 7 days, I will call my ________________ (family member) 3 times to say hello.

  • In the next 7 days, I will spend 3 nights reading for 20 minutes.

  • In the next 7 days, I will exercise 3 times for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Step 3: Track your progress by re-creating the box below (it is an example) on a piece of looseleaf:

GOAL: Write your S.M.A.R.T. goal first.

  • Example: In the next 7 days, I will go outside 4 times for a minimum of 30 minutes.

DATE

INITIALS OR DETAILS

April 20th

Walked my dog for 45 minutes

April 22nd

Went for a 30-minute walk

April 24th

Raked leaves for an hour

April 26th

Walked my dog for 30 minutes

Step 4: At the end of the week, write a short reflection on how you felt after reaching your goal.

Give this a try, if you like, and next week we will carry on with the next task, a bit of interesting reading!

MATH:

This week for Math, I have assigned a 16-question review sheet of some of the concepts we have covered so far. You can do all 16 questions, or only some of them. I will share the answers with you at the end of the week. To find the 16-question review sheet, here are the steps:
