Here are your tasks for the week of May 18th:

 

ENGLISH:

 

You will have 2 tasks this week:

 

1.  10-Step to Achieving Your Goal/Dream Project:

 

  • Read instructions in Pages and Files - the document is called "Week of May 18th English"
  • Complete the 3 steps to choose your topic and begin the process (you will do some research). This is after the instructions on the document explained just above in the first bullet - scroll down.

 

2. Make Your Bed:

 

         *Hint: Turn up the volume, it is way more powerful!

 

  • Write down 5 "take-away" messages that you learned from this video. What did you learn?

         Please...one of them should not be "make your bed"!

 

MATH:

 

To start off the week, let's correct last week's homework: 

 

  • The answers to the area of a parallelogram and triangle are in Pages and Files - the document is called "Answers to Area of Parallelogram and Triangle".

 

And... do some review:

ENGLISH:

 

Making your vision board:

  • It's best to work on it over the course of the week so that you can think about, and keep on coming back to it with fresh eyes and ideas.

MATH:

 

The answers to the Workbook questions and “Square and Rectangle Work at Home” sheets are now in the Pages and Files section.

I hope you had a minute to check the solutions to the Math Help Services practice chapter tests. 

 

I have now assigned 2 review assignments on Math Help Services:

 

  • Adding and subtracting integers (Tip: If you see some thing like this  6 + -5, put brackets around each integer so it makes sense to you, like this (6) + (-5).
  • Multiplying and dividing integers (Tip: If you see something like this (-4)(+3), remember that two brackets next to each other means multiply so it means the same thing as (-4) x (+3). 

 

This week, we will focus on the area of a parallelogram and triangle. The explanation sheet, along with two practice sheets, is in the "Pages and Files section". Part way through the week, I will assign some more review of past topics as well.

Here are your tasks for the week of May 4th:

 

 

ENGLISH:

 

This past week, you were asked to read articles on the “big idea” that depending on your life circumstances, your goals/dreams may be different. In the back of your mind, I would like for you to think about the following question, “If I were to pick one goal that I would like to work towards, what would it be?” We will go into more detail in the coming weeks.

 

This week’s task will be in two parts:

 

1.  Article: CVR gym teacher finishes just ahead of bombings - The Gleaner - 2013 (in "Pages & Files" section)

 

  • This  article is about Mr.Theriault, who has a passion for running marathons, qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2013.
  • Read this article and when you are done, answer the following question, "Name 5 things that you think helped Mr.Theriault finish the run." 
  • I'll come back to this next week.

 

2.  Vision Board: A vision board is a visual representation of dreams and goals that you would like to actively work on to achieve.

 

So what does this mean? It means that eventually, once the outline (see below) is complete, you will create a vision board on a regular white piece of paper (8.5 in. x 11 in.) to represent the things you chose to include in your outline. The purpose of this vision board is for you to put it up in your room as a constant reminder of some of your goals/dreams. The first step towards making the vision board is to complete the outline. So for this week:

 

  • Complete the outline (in "Pages & Files" section). If you can't print it, you can answer the questions on a piece of looseleaf.
  • This will help you think about things that you would like to include on your vision board. 
  • Please don't worry about what you will need to make it, or what it will look like, we will discuss this next week and I will provide an example.

  • When calculating area and perimeter, please make sure you always start with the formula.

Now that you set a goal and see it through, I hope that you feel a sense of accomplishment. Imagine if, week after week, you continued to set small goals, all the while, working towards something bigger. Something to be discussed in the coming weeks…

  

Article Reading

The idea behind this quote is that we all have different dreams, and that dreams mean different things to different people. In Africa, perhaps a child’s dream is to have access to clean, drinking water and to go to school. If you lived in the mid-1800’s in the United States as a slave, your dream was to one day be free. If you were born with a disability, your dream might be to be able to do the same thing that your peers can do. Other dreams might be to finish high school and go on to college, run a marathon, get a good job and own a house or own a 1967 Shelby Mustang!

 

This week’s task will be to read 3 articles from Scholastic Scope (see links below). As you read the articles, remember that, “Dreams mean different things to different people”.

Math Help Services is now up and running! I understand that this is a new tool, be patient and take the time to explore the site. Your login information has been sent to your NFSB email addresses. Each week, I will assign some topics for you to work on.

 

In your email, you will notice that I have given you an assignment for each topic. Feel free to watch the videos to help you understand if needed. Keep in mind that you have seen these topics in elementary school.

Here are your tasks for the week of April 20th:

 

 

ENGLISH:

 

If we were in class right now, we would be working on the term 3 question, “How do we achieve our dreams?” An unknown author once said, “Never let it be said that to dream is to waste one’s time, for dreams are our reality in waiting. In dreams, we plant the seeds for our future.” This has always been my favourite unit since I really do feel that looking ahead and thinking about some of the things you would like to accomplish is valuable exercise that I wish someone had gone through with me when I was your age. So, I thought I would take you through the process of exploring this “big idea” over the next few weeks. Please keep in mind that this is optional and will not be evaluated.

 

 

Here are the tasks that I will be sharing with you over the course of the next few weeks: 

  • Goal setting 

  • Reading articles based on this “big idea” 

  • Reading about a person who has achieved a goal/dream 

  • Making your own vision board 

  • A 10-step power point or poster on a plan that you have come up with to reach a goal/dream 

  • Write a narrative about someone reaching a goal/achieving a dream 

  

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 20TH:

 

GOAL SETTING...

  

Setting goals is the first step to turning the invisible into visible. – Tony Robbins

 

We have had classroom discussions about the importance of setting goals, after all, reaching one goal after the next leads to a bigger goal/dream. This week, I would like you to focus on setting a goal and tracking your progress. Remember, a S.M.A.R.T. goal is one that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.

 

Step 1: Choose a goal. It can be based on anything of your choosing, examples are: getting outside, less screen time, playing with your siblings, helping with household chores, being in touch with family/friends, being active, trying new recipes, reading, etc.

 

Step 2: Write it down as a S.M.A.R.T. goal. Here are some examples:

 

  • In the next 7 days, I will go outside 4 times for a minimum of 30 minutes.  

  • In the next 7 days, I will call my ________________ (family member) 3 times to say hello. 

  • In the next 7 days, I will spend 3 nights reading for 20 minutes. 

  • In the next 7 days, I will exercise 3 times for a minimum of 30 minutes. 

  

  

Step 3: Track your progress by re-creating the box below (it is an example) on a piece of looseleaf: 

  

GOAL: Write your S.M.A.R.T. goal first.

 

  • Example: In the next 7 days, I will go outside 4 times for a minimum of 30 minutes.

MATH:

 

This week for Math, I have assigned a 16-question review sheet of some of the concepts we have covered so far. You can do all 16 questions, or only some of them. I will share the answers with you at the end of the week. To find the 16-question review sheet, here are the steps:

 

1.  Go to the top of this page where it says Wiki, Pages & Files, Users and Settings.

2.  Click on "Pages & Files".

3.  Click on "Math Review April 20th".

4.  You may have to click on "Download" in order for the document to save on your computer.

5.  To get back to the main homework page, click on "Wiki".

 

A few things to remember when doing Math:

 

  • Show your work.
  • Use a highlighter.
  • Check your work over.
  • Be neat.
  • Label your work where appropriate.
